You tell your dog to “sit” and he runs in circles. You say “come” and she sprints… the other way. Sound familiar? You’re not alone. When it comes to dog obedience fails, most new pet parents are winging it (and sometimes the dog is, too). This post breaks down the common dog training mistakes we allmake—and how to fix them before your pup eats another slipper. Bonus: two top-rated dog training resources to help you level up (without yelling “No!” like a broken record).
The rescued pup who found his people
Bruno’s story starts on the streets of Spain, where he was rescued before making his way to a loving forever home. At first, his new family thought he was just extra laid-back. After a few days, they realized that he wasn’t responding to them, so they tried speaking Spanish to the dog – and that didn’t work as well. A vet visit confirmed that Bruno was deaf. “We have no idea if he was born deaf, but he did have a bad ear infection when we got him,” Skye said (Bruno’s mom)

A new language of love
Instead of using words, Bruno’s owners began teaching him British Sign Language (BSL) and other hand signals to support their pup. The pups parents were already familiar with signing because both of Daniel’s (Bruno’s Dad) parents are deaf so it was easy for them. With the help of treats, patience, and consistency, Bruno picked it up in no time.
Now, the pup knows how to sit, stay, lie down, and even roll over—all thanks to his ability to read hand gestures. But there’s one sign that gets a bigger reaction than all the rest.
You guessed it: the sign for “walk.”
Skye describes Bruno as “He’s a loving, goofy boy, he’s clumsy, and he’ll look for attention from just about anyone.”
The Big reaction
The second his humans flash the sign for walk, Bruno’s whole personality bursts to life. His tail starts wagging like a windmill, his eyes light up, and he sprints around the room in pure excitement. It’s like someone flipped a joy switch.
It’s not just about going outside—it’s about the bond he shares with his humans. Bruno knows that when he sees that sign, he’s about to explore the world with the people who love him most. And that realization is enough to make him wiggle with happiness every single time.
Why it means so much
Sure, it’s cute to watch a dog bounce around at the thought of a walk. But with Bruno, there’s something extra meaningful.
His reaction shows the incredible adaptability of dogs. They don’t need words to understand us—they just need our patience, our consistency, and our love. Bruno doesn’t hear “walk,” but he feels it. He sees it. And he responds with every ounce of his being.
A lesson in patience and joy
Training Bruno wasn’t always easy, but his family knew he deserved the chance to thrive. By taking the time to adapt, they unlocked his goofy, affectionate personality.
Now, he’s proof that with a little creativity, so-called “limitations” can actually turn into strengths. Instead of relying on voice commands, his humans use hand gestures—and honestly, it might even make their bond stronger.
And the payoff? Every time they show him the sign for walk, they get to see the purest form of joy in action.
Bruno may not hear the word “walk,” but he doesn’t need to. He’s found his own language with his parents—a language built on love, patience, and a whole lot of tail wags.
His story is a testament to how adaptable and resilient dogs are, and how special the bond between pets and people can be. At the end of the day, it’s not about what we say—it’s about how we connect.
So the next time you head out with your furry friend, think of Bruno. Whether it’s a word, a sign, or just the jingling of a leash, what matters most is the happiness you share along the way.
